Six Things You Already Have In Your Home And Can Use For Carpet Cleaning

When you think of cleaning your carpet, the first things that come to mind may be bottles of specialized cleaners and high-powered carpet shampooers. However, carpet cleaning does not always have to be complicated. Here are six things you probably already have around your home and can use to clean your carpet.

Ice Cubes

Ice cubes come in really handy if you need to remove gum from your carpet. Hold the ice cube against the gum until it gets hard. Then, pick the gum off the carpet fibers.

Dish Soap

Dish soap is well known for its grease-fighting ability, and it's as effective on your carpet as on dishes. If you have any greasy spills or stains on your carpet, mix some dish soap into water, pour the mixture onto the stain, and then blot the mixture up with a soft cloth, rinsing it as needed.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Wine stains are everyone's worst fear, especially if you have a very light-colored carpet. But hydrogen peroxide will come to the rescue. Pour a little on the wine stain, let it sit for a minute, and then blot it up. It will also work well for removing blood stains from the carpet.

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream works as well as many specially made carpet stain removers -- especially if you purchase the kind that starts as a gel and turns into a foam. If the stained area is not already wet, moisten it with some water. Then, apply the shaving cream and pat it gently into the stained area. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, and then blot it up.

Vinegar

Vinegar is exceptional for treating smelly areas. For instance, if you remove a food stain with shaving cream or dish soap but the area still smells a little off, treating it with vinegar is a good option. Just pour a little of the white vinegar straight onto the carpet, and let it evaporate on its own. The acidic vinegar will neutralize most odor molecules.

An Iron

If you happen to get wax on your carpet, your clothing iron will come in really handy. You can turn it on the lowest heat setting and hold it against the wax to liquefy the wax. Then, you should be able to wipe the wax off the carpet using any rag or cloth.
