Chimney Repair 101: What You Should DIY And What You Should Hire Out

As a homeowner, it's always nice to be able to save money whenever you can, and a great way to do that is by doing some DIY projects.  It can save you a lot of money hen you don't have to hire anyone to do the job for you, but it might cost you a little bit more time. If you have a chimney in your house that is need of some repair, you may be wondering if you need to hire the job out or if you can attempt to do the job on your own. To help you avoid ending up with a crumbled chimney, this article will take a closer look at a few things you can either DIY or that you should call a commercial chimney repair services company for.

DIY: Fix the Mortar On Your Brick

This one can be a little bit tricky, but it's also something you can do on your own. If you have a loose brick, then you can usually just put it back with a little bit of cement (brick mortar). To do this, all you have to do is put some mortar on the back of the brick and push it back into the wall. Then, once it's in place, you will take mortar and place it around the edge. If the missing brick is just cosmetic, then it's something you can do on your own. If, however, the missing brick is structural, then you will definitely want to call a chimney repair service to come and fix it for you.

Hire Out: The Chimney Flue Is Cracked

If you live in an old house and you use the fireplace all of the time, then you may experience a cracked chimney flue. When the flue is cracked, it can cause a bunch of smoke to seep into your house every time that you light a fire -- which can be really awful. The flue inside of a chimney is really complex and should only be worked on by a chimney repair service company. The company will come out and inspect the inside of your flue to see where the crack is. Typically, they will have to do this with a camera that's on the end of a stick. Then, depending on how severe the crack is, they will usually just patch it up so that it's sealed off. If the damage is really bad, they may need to replace the entire flue, which can be quite pricey.

These are two of the main chimney repairs that people run into. Before you DIY something with your chimney, reach out to a commercial chimney repair service and see how much it will cost you.
