If you have a male cat that has not been neutered, it will likely spray in your home. If this has happened, this spray can leave behind a strong odor that can be difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help your home smell better, two of which are listed below.
Baking Soda or Vinegar
If you do not like to use toxic cleaners, you can make your own cleaners to remove the odor. One common thing used is baking soda. If the carpet smells like cat spray, first cover the area with baking soda and leave it on the area overnight. Vacuum the carpet when you wake up the next day. Baking soda can absorb odors which may eliminate the smell.
If the odor is on something you can wash, rinse in cool water first. Place the item in the washing machine and use your regular laundry detergent. Add about a cup of baking soda to the washing machine and then wash the item as you normally do.
Vinegar also works well to remove cat spray. Fill a spray bottle with half water and half distilled vinegar and spray the area. Leave the vinegar on for a few hours then blot dry with a clean rag or paper towel.
Enzymatic Cleaner
Purchase an enzymatic cleaner at a home improvement store that is made to remove cat odors. Enzymatic cleaners break down the molecules in the cat spray and urine to help remove the odor while also cleaning. Follow the directions on the product that you purchase on how to use it. You may have to clean the area more than one time as the odor may linger for a few days. When you apply the cleaner to carpeting or flooring, cover it with a box or laundry basket to prevent your cat from getting to the cleaner.
If you have items that are washable, you can add some of the enzymatic cleaner to your washing machine to help remove the odors. The cleaner that you purchase should have instructions on how much to use for this.
Open all the windows in your home to air things out when you finish cleaning with the enzymatic cleaner. Turn on fans in your home and make sure all doors are open.
Take your male cat to the veterinarian to have it neutered or it will spray in your home again. For more information, contact a pet odor removal service today.
